Why Owning a Gun Safe Is Necessary

Being a responsible gun owner means more than just registering your gun, it also means that you keep it out of the hands who could use it for harm, accidentally or intentionally. There are now various laws that are required by State, that a gun owner must comply with if they are to continue to legally own a gun. While few would argue that a gun safe is not necessary, far more will argue that it is indeed necessary. If you need some convincing that owning a gun safe is not only the responsible thing for a gun owner to do but that it is also necessary to protect yourself and others.

  • Safety – This is one of the most important reasons for owning a gun safe. Consider the harm that could come to you if a burglary were to take hold of a gun that you own. There are too many awful scenario’s that could play out. One could alarm them and they could accidentally fire the weapon killing or harming anyone in the path of the bullet. Also, consider what could happen if a child were playing with a gun that they were able to obtain from your home. They could not only harm themselves but they could harm anyone else who may be around.

Some like to have their guns prominently on display and will use a glass cabinet to protect anyone from gaining access to the safe. The only problem with this is that it is in plain sight and the glass can be broken.

  • Protects the Rights of Gun Owners- The biggest argument that gun activist make is that guns are dangerous regardless of who has them. They feel that guns are a threat to the safety of those in the public. They consider law-abiding gun owners as people who are irresponsible and evil. When an incident occurs that involves a gun, they can prove their claim, even if the incident wasn’t fatal. The media will be interested in every incident that involves guns, especially if a child is involved. If you are going to be able to protect your rights to carry a gun, be responsible and keep them locked up. This protects your 2nd Amendment rights.

  • Prevents Children from Accessing - To protect children, 27 states, including the District of Columbia, require that guns be locked up to prevent small children from gaining access to them. There are penalties involved, which vary by state. However, if you are found negligent by not keeping your guns stored, you could still face charges. This could be the case if a child were able to gain access to the gun or not. You are required, by law, in specific states, to keep your guns locked up at all times. In some instances, even people without children are affected. If they own a gun that a child who was in their home, accessed, they could still be found negligent.

Firearm Locking Device Laws - Firearm Locking Device Laws – Again, in states, whether they have a law that requires you to keep your gun in a safe, you do not even have to have children. There are at least eleven states that require requires the gun owner to have some locking device after purchasing the gun. The District of Columbia and one other state, requires you to store your gun with the lock in place. In California, they have gun safety standards that must be met before the California Department of Justice will approve your ownership of them. Be sure to check your state laws regarding gun ownership and keeping them properly locked up.

  • Keep Out of the Hands of an Intruder – When someone breaks into your home, they are looking for something that will be of value to them. In many cases, if they see a gun, they likely know what they can get for it. There is something known as ‘street value’. This is when someone on the street is not permitted to own a firearm. They will often find someone willing to sell them the gun without the proper paperwork. They will often pay more for it if they buy it from someone on the street than if they went to a gun shop.

If an intruder or someone whom they sell the gun to, uses it in an armed robbery or to harm someone, you could be liable for the incident. If you do not want to risk such a think occurring to you, make sure you protect yourself by storing your firearms in a gun safe.

  • Insurance Limits – If you haven’t read your homeowners insurance, you should. You might think that you are covered if your gun is stolen or damaged. There is a limit to how much the insurance will pay out for your firearm. Make sure you know what the limit is for coverage of your gun by contacting your insurance agency or having a good look at your policy. Some cover fire damages but not the theft of a gun.

You will hardly, if ever, recoup the full value or even partial value of your firearm if it is stolen. Having a gun safe can prevent your gun from being stolen and you losing in the insurance side of things.

  • Insurance Discounts – In some places, responsible gun owners are offered a discount for having a gun safe. They are often offered for a fire-rated safe, gun safe, true safe and any other measures you take to protect your gun from falling into the wrong hands. Check the requirements before purchasing a gun safe if you are hoping to take advantage of the insurance discounts offered.

While these are just some reasons to purchase a gun safe, there are countless more reasons to do so. Make sure you consider your options very carefully. Whatever you do, just do it and protect yourself and others.
